Jiangsu Ship Union New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. is the first enterprise in the province specializing in the research and market application development of ship electrification technology. The company’s technical team began researching the application of pure electric drive systems in the shipbuilding industry in 2014. To date, the company has obtained 13 patents, with other patents currently under application, covering technologies in motor control, ship-specific batteries, power distribution management, data information, and battery-swapping projects.

Currently, the company has established China’s first and only comprehensive electric ship test base in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport's Jiangsu Maritime Safety Administration, located in Jiangxinzhou, Nanjing. The company has also signed cooperation agreements for industrial, academic, and research collaboration in the field of electric ships with several related organizations, including the State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Company, the National Waterway Safety Engineering Technology Research Center, the Ministry of Transport's Jiangsu Maritime Safety Administration, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Nanjing Municipal Transportation Bureau’s Law Enforcement Team 5, and Jiangsu Canal Shipping Co., Ltd. The goal is to jointly promote the electrification and intelligence of inland river shipping vessels, thereby significantly reducing water transport costs, greatly improving sailing safety, gradually eliminating pollution of river and lake waters caused by fuel-powered ships, and contributing to the realization of President Xi's vision of green development with clear rivers and green mountains.

In August 2020, the company reached a technology research and development agreement with the Nanjing Local Maritime Bureau, undertaking the nation’s first research task of converting the largest-tonnage cargo ship in the Yangtze River basin, "Ship Union No. 1," from oil to electricity, and the nation’s first research task for converting an administrative law enforcement ship from oil to electricity. This has made the company a key unit for Nanjing’s major transportation research tasks.
